Young Choristers Program
Based in the RSCM tradition
At Christ Church, we believe the youth of the congregation should be leaders in the church's life, whether that be as a reader, an acolyte, or a member of the choir. The Young Choristers Program trains youth to be church leaders through music. Young Choristers are active in the leading of the hymns, singing the anthems, and helping to enliven congregational worship. The curriculum is based off the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), which is a highly respected program used from over 50,000 churches around the world. Research has shown that children who are active in a regular musical training program excel in school and in life in ways such as: 1) Improved focus, attention, and memory, 2)Improved language, reading, and math skills, 3) Improved social skills, self-confidence, and independence, 4)Leadership skills, 5)Friendships that often last a lifetime.
Singing in church is not just about music! History shows that involvement and dedication in a young choristers program is a path to dedicated commitment to the church in adult life. A parent who actively supports and encourages a child’s development in the church’s music ministry is practicing good stewardship of the child’s developing spirit and soul. All children are a gift from God, and so all children have a God given instrument tuned for praise.
Choristers meet once a week for rehearsal and sing on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month during the regular choir season (September-June). They are taught such things as: how to read music, using the voice well, good posture, how to process down the aisle, musical terminology, repertoire, and history of music. In addition to musical learning, choristers learn about theology, how the Episcopal service is structured, the Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, team building, and character development.
